What This Year Includes

As we start the new year, there are three major areas we are focusing pretty heavily on:

Diet : watching what we eat. This area of our life ebbs and flows with great regularity. We go through seasons of great success and spurts of great failure. Yet we know the greatest chance for success comes in regularly keeping track of what we eat. Therefore, we’re both participating in Weight Watchers. Robyn used this before our wedding and hit her goals and it’s consistently rated as one of the only diet plans that actually works. So healthy recipes, portion control, and regular tracking are keys to the new us.

Physical Fitness : The Y has made so much money on us over the past couple years. Month after month we pay for our membership and the greatest advantage we’ve utilized is a discount on our daughter’s swimming lessons. This year we’ve committed to actually using the place we’re paying for and to working out there at least three times a week. We are reorienting our entire weekly schedule around getting to the gym to work out in the wellness center and/or participate in a class. (More on this in future posts.)

Motivation : Today is January 11, which means motivation is fairly strong. Based on our personal history, by February 11th we’ll be getting bored with this approach. By March 11th we will be so tired of it that we won’t even bother any more. Hence we have said for ourselves that every week we will actively seek out external motivation. This will come through a new quote we post on our bathroom mirror every week, reading books and articles, and even watching the Biggest Loser.

The last key is not one that we are doing, but that we have asked others to challenge us with : accountability. We are both seeking help from others to ask us the hard questions to make sure we are staying accountable tomorrow to what we have committed to today.
